Benedict Cumberbatch to play Jasper Maskelyne in WWII drama 'The War Magician'Los Angeles, Dec 9(AZINS) Actor Benedict Cumberbatch is all set to star in World War II epic The War Magician.

The 39-year-old British actor will play the lead character of Jasper Maskelyne, a spellbinder whose clever illusions helped the Allied forces fight the Nazis during World War II, said The Hollywood Reporter.

Garry Whitta is adapting from the fact-based book by David Fisher.

No director is currently attached to the project to be produced by Storyscape Entertainment principals Bob Cooper and Richard Saperstein.

According to the producers, Maskelyne's techniques were so effective that Adolf Hitler added his name to his personal blacklist alongside men like General Douglas MacArthur and British Field Marshall Bernard Montgomery who, if captured alive, were to receive "special" treatment by the Nazis.

The film will be a co-production between Storyscape, Tony Eldridge's Lonetree Entertainment.
