Kareena Kapoor Khan, Deepika Padukone, Anushka Sharma: Oversized outfits to B-Towners' rescue
Kareena Kapoor Khan has always flaunted her shapely form in well-fitting dresses. But for her birthday celebrations at Pataudi this year, she wore a loose white kurta-pyjama. She is not the only B-Towner who has favoured anti-fit outfit in recent times. From jackets to shirts and jeans, celebs have been spotted on various occasions in oversized clothing.

Padmaavat actress Deepika Padukone was snapped at the airport in a loose overcoat. Not to be left behind is her husband Ranveer Singh who donned a big military green coat recently, before a purple one. While collecting air miles, Anushka Sharma chose a chic white oversized shirt to give an interesting spin to the blue jeans-and-white shirt look. The standout top featured a sleek cut with asymmetrical hem and the diva teamed it with ripped blue jeans and easy slip-on sandals to travel in comfort.

Stylist Anuj Lalwani explains the trend’s emergence, “The fashion world experienced a great switch after 1920. Post First World War, from tight corsets and hobble skirts to shapeless, oversized outfits came into fashion. It’s not just comfort but a belief. The tradition of the rich copying the poor soon came into popularity and turned the fashion. Like, two-sizes-too-large sweatshirt on someone living in poverty was seen as ill-fitting and shabby now is edgy, comfortable and comes into Boho-chic style.”

In spite of the enormous size, items of clothing go well with tinier ones as well. Like Aditi Rao Hydari showed us when she paired her mini shorts with an oversized jacket at a lunch date. She was later spotted in flared-up denim teamed with a red top. Katrina Kaif’s denim-on-denim look at the airport made many heads turn as well. She wore a white tee with a denim shirt and jeans. Katrina completed the look with white shoes.

Malaika Arora gave one styling lessons about how to get the look right without going overboard when she wore an oversized white shirt with skin-fitting black leather pants. Designer Shruti Sancheti says, “Fashion is cyclical and once again, the baggy trend of the ’80s, now referred to as oversized or anti-fit, is in vogue. With the rise of high-street, athleisure and hip hop, this trend has really become popular.” She adds that it is popular because it is comfortable yet statement, making the wearer look youthful. However, she warns, “This trend can look smart but there is a difference between oversized and big. The element of balance is important. Also, one has to be careful with colours and not wear really bright hues. If you want definition, add a belt or team it with tailored or skinny fit clothes.”
