Cricket association's announcement
The Arizona Cricket Association (ACA) is a formally recognized, non-profit association that has been formed to encourage and support the playing of first class cricket in Arizona. ACA is also a fellow member of USA Cricket Association (USACA) which is formally recognized by the International Cricket Council (ICC). Currently, the ACA comprises of 18 Cricket teams, 16 in the Phoenix metropolitan area and 2 in Tucson. ACA players come from most of the major cricket playing nations around the world: Australia, Bangladesh, England, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, the West Indies and Zimbabwe, as well as a few home grown players from the USA.
Teams play on seven different grounds in the Phoenix area (two in Chandler, one in Gilbert, one in Glendale, one in Scottsdale, and one in Mesa and one in Laveen) one ground in north central Tucson. The Arizona Cricket League playing season generally starts in October with practice games and ends in May with a knock-out tournament (Playoffs). The teams are divided into two leagues, called as A division and B division. The A division teams would compete against one another while the B division teams would do so among themselves. Every team play the other team within the same division twice and at the end of the season, the team with maximum number of points is declared the champion of that division. The end of the season is marked with presentation and awards ceremony wherein top players and teams are awarded.
As per the chairman of Arizona Cricket Association, Krishna Perna, ACA 2008-2009 season is going to start in October 2008 and would end in the first week of May. The ACA has already invited all the teams to formally register for the season and this year there could be as many as 24 teams in the league, a jump of 6 teams from the last season. This shows the growth in terms of numbers ACA has seen in recent years.
Over the years the Arizona cricket has evolved into a very competitive league wherein, individual players and the team as a whole have to play good and competitive cricket in order to earn some acclaim. All ICC cricket rules are followed in addition to some of the local rules set forth of ACA committee itself which is formulated at the start of the season.
If you are a player and would like to participate in the tournament, go here and contact one of the teams and register yourself as a player. If you want to form a team, please contact Krishna Perna (Email: [email protected], Phone: 602 692 1373). The last date for accepting the team’s registration is Friday, 5th of September, 2008.
