Helping Hand for Relief and Development increases humanitarian efforts in India following COVID-19 outbreak

Helping Hand for Relief and Development (HHRD) exists as a leader in empowering lives, creating opportunities, and strengthening the bond of humanity. With 17 years of service, HHRD has provided humanitarian relief through 14 programs to over 200 million people across 85 countries. For over a decade, HHRD has been working in India with local credible vetted partner NGOs to implement its Orphan Support, Education Support, Skills Development and Livelihood, Healthcare and Nutrition, Disaster Response, and Seasonal projects. The COVID-19 pandemic, along with the recent surge in infections due to the virus mutation, caused HHRD to increase its efforts for the people of India. As the double mutated COVID-19 virus became dangerously infectious the situation called for immediate international attention for people who were dying to live.

Hospitals in the capital city of New Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and other hard-hit areas were at capacity, while running low on oxygen, beds, and other provisions. India has accounted for almost 14% of the COVID-19 cases in the list of over 200 countries. On April 23, 2021, the overall cases in India were at 16.60 million, the world's second highest after USA, while deaths rose by 7,150 to reach more than 189,550. There were 2,550,788 active cases at that time with 8,944 in serious condition. The mounting crisis of new variants of corona in India threatened to prolong the pandemic.

HHRD provided immediate and long-term medical oxygen to infected patients. Moreover, HHRD was able to secure healthy environment, hot meals, and nonperishable food packages for patients and daily wage workers. With their partner NGOs, HHRD distributed relief items in Assam, Bhopal, Bihar, Jharkhand, New Delhi, and Chennai where a total of over 25,000 people were assisted. More importantly, HHRD was able to provide medical supplies, equipment, and oxygen to two Oxygen Therapy Centers in New Delhi and Hyderabad.

These centers received medical beds, some beds with Non-Invasive Ventilation (NIV) support, oxygen cylinders and concentrators, ventilators, oximeters, ultrasonography machines (USG), BiPAP machines, defibrillators and much more. Over 10,000 patients were assisted through these items and thousands more will continue to benefit from them.

Two Oxygen Generator Plants were sponsored by HHRD and installed at HBS in Bengaluru with 75 Beds: OXYPRO 60 Oxygen Generator with 60 Nm3/Hr O2 of Flow and at good Purity 93% + 2% as well as, at Al-Shifa in New Delhi with 49 Beds: ORLANE 600 Oxygen Generator with 34.2 Nm3/Hr of O2 Flow & at Purity at good Purity of 93% + 3%.

Currently, HHRD is supporting 800 orphans and one hospital in Hyderabad India, one nursing home in Tarnaka, over 120 orphan children residing at an orphanage in Aligarh, over 60 students are in the Education Support Program in Chennai and Hyderabad, and around 75 youth getting employable abilities through the Skills Development and Livelihood Program in Hyderabad. HHRD has responded to several disaster relief efforts in Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Hyderabad, New Delhi, and other parts of India. Lastly, thousands of people receive food and winter relief provisions through annual seasonal projects.
