'Blaming previous govt serves no purpose, accountability should be fixed': Pilot on infant deaths in Kota hospital

Rajasthan Deputy Chief Minister Sachin Pilot on Saturday said criticising the previous government for infants deaths in Kota hospital does not serve any purpose as the Congress has been in power for 13 months.

Pilot who visited some of the families who lost their children and also went to the hospital said accountability should be fixed over the deaths of 107 children in Kota's state-run JK Lon Hospital.

“As many as 107 children have died in the hospital. This is very painful. Our response to the entire matter was not satisfactory to some extent. The response could have been more sensitive and we should have been more compassionate,” Pilot, who is also Congress' Rajasthan unit chief, said.

"After 13 months of being in government, it may not serve any purpose to keep pointing towards the previous government. That government was voted out and we were voted in. We have to face responsibility and consequences. People expect us to deliver," the deputy chief minister told reported after his visit to the families and the hospital.

Congress leaders including Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot have tried to shift responsibility and have blamed BJP government for the mismanagement of government hospitals.

Gehlot said on Friday that the number of deaths of children has reduced in Congress rule. State Health Minister Raghu Sharma blamed the BJP for politicising the matter as he visited the hospital in Kota on Friday.

Noting that underprivileged people are dependent on government hospitals, Pilot said, "They have lost their children and do not accept the argument about how many deaths occurred earlier and how many have died now.”

When asked to comment on the chief minister's statement, Pilot said, “Whatever I am saying, I am saying with full responsibility.”

Responding to a question if Congress leadership was looking at the matter, Pilot said part president Sonia Gandhi was very concerned about it.

“She is very concerned. Not just her, but the state and entire country is concerned. It is not a small incident but a heart wrenching matter. The entire country has shaken up,” he said.

Earlier on Saturday, a central government team visited the hospital to probe the death of these infants. The six-member team comprises of doctors from Delhi's AIIMS who will interact with senior officials at the hospital and take cognisance of the situation.

The team was constituted by the Union Health Ministry headed by Dr Harsh Vardhan.

Meanwhile, Lok Sabha Speaker and Kota MP Om Birla also met the family members of some of the infants.

"I met some families of the infants who passed away in JK Lon hospital. We are standing with these families in this hour of grief. I have written twice to Rajasthan CM, suggesting steps to improve medical facilities," Om Birla said.

In the wake of the incident, Birla, and Harsh Vardhan had written to Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot to look into the matter.
