Andhra Pradesh: At least 12 drown as boat capsizes in Godavari river, Navy's Dornier joins search and rescue

At least 12 people were killed after a tourist boat carrying 61 people capsized in Godavari river in Andhra Pradesh's East Godavari district on Sunday. 

While 23 people were rescued the search for others is on. 

Two NDRF teams of 30 members each were immediately dispatched to join the rescue operations. Local police is also involved in the search and rescue operation. 

The Indian Navy also deployed a helicopter to assist in the search and rescue operation. 

A Naval Dornier was also dispatched by the Indian Navy to Rajahmundry with diving team to assist in the search operation to locate missing persons on the request of the state administration. The Dornier along with naval diving team, inflatable Gemini boat and associated equipment was deployed from Naval Air Station, INS Dega to Rajahmundry this evening.

Two naval helicopters will also be deployed from INS Dega on Monday morning to join the search operation along with NDRF, SDRF and civil authorities. 

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy has directed all available ministers in the district to supervise rescue works at the site of the incident. He also directed officials to suspend all boating services in the region immediately. 

The Chief Minister also announced Rs 10 lakh each ex-gratia for the families of the victims. 

Speaking to media, a survivor said the boat tilted on one side and many slipped into the water while others jumped. I feel there were 60-65 people altogether on the boat, the unidentified survivor said. 

"The boat tilted on one side all of a sudden. Many slipped and many of us jumped as it turned complete upside down. All of us were in the water. Another boat which was nearby rescued us," he said. 

"I feel there were 60-65 people altogether on the boat. We are a group of 14 from Warangal district in Telangana. Five of us are safe but the fate of nine others not known," he added. 

Condolences

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh condoled the death of the people. 

"Extremely pained by the capsizing of a boat in Andhra Pradesh's East Godavari. My thoughts are with the bereaved families. Rescue operations are currently underway at the site of the tragedy," Modi said in a tweet.

Shah said he was "deeply pained" by the incident. 

"The loss of lives due to capsizing of a boat in East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh is very unfortunate," he said. 

"My thoughts are with families of those who have lost their loved ones. May god give the bereaved families strength to withstand this tragic loss," he added. 

Singh also expressed his condolences in a tweet. 

"Deeply anguished at the loss of precious lives due to capsizing of a boat in East Godavari, Andhra Pradesh. My heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased," Singh tweeted.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also offered his condolence to the families of the victims. 

"I’m sorry to hear about the boat accident in the Godavari river, in # AndhraPradesh. My deepest condolences to the families of those who have perished in this tragedy. I pray that all those reported missing will soon be accounted for and that they are safe," he said. 

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also expressed condolences at the loss of lives in the Godavari boat tragedy in Andhra Pradesh.

"Saddened at the loss of lives in the Godavari boat tragedy in Andhra Pradesh. My condolences to the families of the deceased. My prayers that the missing passengers are rescued," she tweeted.
