'Accepting people’s verdict and taking accountability': Jyotiraditya Scindia resigns as AICC General Secretary

July 7 (AZINS) Amid the flurry of resignations in the Congress, former Guna MP Jyotiraditya Scindia on Sunday quit as General Secretary of All India Congress Committee (AICC). Announcing his resignation on Twitter, Scindia said he had submitted his resignation to Rahul Gandhi who himself has quit as the Congress president.

"Accepting the people’s verdict and taking accountability, I had submitted my resignation as General Secretary of AICC to Shri @RahulGandhi. I thank him for entrusting me with this responsibility and for giving me the opportunity to serve our party," Scindia tweeted.

Scindia, as AICC General Secretary, was in-charge of Uttar Pradesh West, along with Mr Gandhi's sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra who was in-charge of Eastern UP.

The two leaders were appointed by Rahul Gandhi in January this year to lead the Congress in the state which sends 80 MPs to Lok Sabha.

"I haven't resigned today. I had submitted my resignation to Congress President Rahul Gandhi 8-10 days ago. I am not a leader who gives orders to others. I think when there is a responsibility, there comes accountability as well. Even I am responsible if performance isn't good and therefore, I took the decision to resign," Scindia told ANI.

While the party won only one seat in the state - UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi's traditional seat of Rae Bareli - Scindia himself lost from his Guna seat in Madhya Pradesh. Guna is the traditional seat of Scindia family with Jyotiraditya Scindia winning from here four times. Before him, his father Madhavrao Scindia, his grandmother Rajmata Vijaya Raje Scindia representing it as Congress and BJP MP respectively.

Earlier on Sunday, Mumbai Congress chief Milind Deora also resigned from his post. Deora, who had lost for the second consecutive time to Shiv Sena nominee Arvind Sawant in south Mumbai constituency, had replaced Sanjay Nirupam as the president of Mumbai Regional Congress Committee (MRCC) in the run up to the Lok Sabha election.

Deora, who had expressed his desire to quit on June 26, has stepped down to express solidarity and collective responsibility with the outgoing Congress president Rahul Gandhi. Deora may move to Delhi for a national role in the party.

The resignations of two young Congress leaders, who were seen close to Rahul Gandhi, comes at a time when the party is looking for new leader to take over as the party chief following Gandhi's denial to continue on the post.

Deora has recommended a provisional set up of collective leadership of three senior leaders to oversee the city unit until the upcoming assembly polls.
