Uluberia Lok Sabha election results 2019 West Bengal: TMC's Sajda Ahmed wins by over 2 lakh votes

May 23 (AZINS) Uluberial Lok Sabha constituency in West Bengal polled in the fifth phase of Lok Sabha elections 2019. Here is breakdown of how candidates fared

TMC's Sajda Ahmed has won against Joy Mukherjee of BJP by 2.15 lakh votes.

Uluberia Lok Sabha constituency profile:

Uluberia Lok Sabha seat in rural Howrah is one of the 42 Lok Sabha seats in West Bengal. Its electoral fortunes have charted a similar course to many other constituencies in the state. Once a Left fortress, now it is a TMC citadel as most of red workers have changed ship after paribartan happened in Bengal. In 2019, Uluberia is witnessing a four-cornered fight with sitting MP Sajda Ahmed of TMC contesting against Masqooda Khatun of CPI(M), Joy Banerjee of BJP and Shoma Ranisree Roy of Congress.

Sajda Ahmed won the by-election in 2018 defeating BJP's Anupam Mallick by 4.74 lakh votes. The by-election took place after death of Sajda's husband and two-time MP Sultan Ahmed.Sultan was one of the most respected minority leader of the state and Sajda aided by sympathy factor won easily last year in a seat consisting of significant proportion of minority voters.

TMC will hope for a similar route in 2019, but in Joy Mukherjee,  BJP has put up a strong candidate and will hope to exploit the infighting in the ruling party.  The Left is trying to get back relevance after it was pushed to the fringes in 2014. Looking back, Hannan Mollah of CPI(M) won the seat eight times in a row from 1980 to 2004. In total, CPI(M) has won Uluberia ten times, Congress thrice and TMC in the last two elections.

Overall though, TMC had a significant edge in Uluberia which went to polls on May 6. The assembly segments under Uluberia are Uluberia Purba, Uluberia Uttar (SC), Uluberia Dakshin,  Shyampur, Bagnan, Amta and Udaynarayanpur. Assembly by-poll for Uluberia Purba will also take place simultaneously where TMC's Idris Ali is in the fray.
