Months after protest, Devendra Fadnavis govt approves independent reservation to Marathas in SEBC
Nov 18 (AZINS) Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Sunday announced that the Maratha community will get reservations in jobs and education, months after massive protests by members of the community.
The development comes after Maharashtra State Backward Class Commission submitted its report on the social and economic conditions of the Marathas, to the state government.
"We received Backward Class Commission report with 3 recommendations. Independent reservation will be given to Maratha community in Socially and Educationally Backward Classes (SEBC)," said Fadnavis.
The Chief Minister also said that they have constituted a Cabinet Sub-committee to take statutory steps for implementing the recommendations.
Earlier, Maharashtra Water Resources Minister Girish Mahajan had met activists of the Maratha Kranti Morcha (MKM) at Azad Maidan.
Opposition Leader in the Assembly Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil, who also met MKM protesters earlier Saturday, has warned of a breach of privilege motion in the House as the report of the Maharashtra State Backward Class Commission on socio-economic conditions of the Marathas was 'leaked'.
Nearly half a dozen MLAs had announced their resignations from the Legislature during the peak of the Maratha reservation stir. Only Shiv Sena's Harshvardhan Jadhav, though, submitted his resignation to Speaker Haribhau Bagade. Disgruntled BJP MLA Ashish Deshmukh also quit the House.
On June 25, 2014, the then Congress-NCP government had announced 16 per cent reservation for Marathas and five percent reservation for the Muslims. However, on November 14, 2014, the Bombay High Court stayed the decision in response to a PIL.
Maratha organisations had staged agitation for quota across the state in July and August this year.
