Assam massacre: 72 hours before murders, cops had received a letter predicting attacks

Nov 5 (AZINS) 72 hours prior to the attack where suspected ULFA militants killed five people, a letter dated October 29, a copy of which is in this news organisation’s possession, the DGP, Special Branch  (Assam) had intimated top cops of the possibility of an attack.

The letter states that statements made by ULFA (Independent), ULFA (pro talks) regarding the NRC, had frustrated Bengalis living in Assam – some of whom had voiced their opinion on social media. These posts have been communal in nature, which could result in a volatile situation, the letter implied.

“The situation may result in clashes between Assamese and Bengalis in the state and ULFA may resort to attacking vulnerable Bengali pockets in the state,” the letter added.

The letter had asked the police to treat the input with seriousness and has asked the police to nurture their intelligence input to tackle the situation.

With five people getting killed, questions have arisen as to why the police took this letter lightly.

At least five people were killed and one were injured after suspected United Liberation Front of Assam-Independent (ULFA-I) opened fire at them in Assam’s Sadiya, which falls under the jurisdiction of Tinsukia district.

According to information, the six youngsters, who were sitting at a shop in the area, were targeted by the gunmen – all in camouflage attire. They were then taken to the banks of Brahmaputra river where they were told to sit in line and shot at.

Sources have said that the victims are Bengalis and the ULFA-I action is retaliation to the rift between Bengalis and the Assamese people following the central government implementing NRC in the state.

Assam CM Sarbananda Sonowal condemned the attack and has asked ministers Keshab Mahanta & Tapan Gogoi, DGP Kuladhar Saikia & ADGP Mukesh Agarwalla to rush to the spot and take stock of the situation.

Terrible news coming out of Assam. We strongly condemn the brutal attack in Tinsukia and the killing of Shyamlal Biswas, Ananta Biswas, Abhinash Biswas, Subodh Das. Is this the outcome of recent NRC development ?
