PM Modi claims 5 cr Indians came out of poverty in last 2 years, accuses opposition of delaying development projects

July 15 (AZINS) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday slammed the Congress and other opposition parties for playing politics and shedding crocodile tears for farmers but doing nothing for their welfare.

Dedicating Rs 3,400-crore Bansagar Irrigation Project, Modi took a jibe at the opposition for delaying the project for 40 years and increasing its cost 100 times. “The project was envisaged 40 years ago in 1978 with a cost of Rs 350 crores. Today, when the project was completed the cost escalated to Rs 3400 crores. The country suffered huge financial losses and farmers were deprived of irrigation facility for decades due to delay and neglect of projects by the previous regimes,” he said.

“When my government took over in 2014, we reviewed pending projects. Bansagar irrigation project was one of them. We linked it with Prime Minister Irrigation Scheme and restarted the work on priority. Today, the project is dedicated to farmers who should ask these parties why such projects were neglected and left incomplete across the country. Farmers would have been benefitted with irrigation facility 20 years back if the project was completed in time,” said Modi.

The PM said that those who are shedding crocodile tears and play politics in the name of farmers should be asked why they did not raise the MSP of paddy drops even after taking a decision long ago in files. “As promised, we raised the MSP to double the income of farmers. It was a step in the direction of doubling farmers’ income by 2022,” said the PM.

“Garib ko dawai, kisan ko sichai, bachcho ko padai, yuvao ko kamai (Medicines to the poor, irrigation facility to farmers, education to children and jobs to youth), when a government aims to fulfil these then it offers a transparent and honest governance and opportunities for all. My government has envisaged a ‘New India’ with these priorities in mind to serve the people of the country,” Modi said.

The Prime Minister said that an international report claimed that over 5 crore poor people came out poverty lines in the last two years in India. “This was made possible only because of various welfare schemes launched by our government for the benefit of the poor, Dalits and backwards to increase their income and improve their lifestyle,” Modi pointed out.

Over 2 lakh farmers of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Bihar will be benefited with the launch of the Bansagar Irrigation project covering about 1.5 lakh hectares land. “It will give a boost to irrigation facility in the region. Work on two more irrigation projects Saryu Canal and Madhya Sagar has been started for the benefit of farmers,” he said.

He asked farmers to pledge to save water for future generation by using the micro irrigation system and drip irrigation facility for which the government provides a subsidy. He also suggested farmers grow bamboos on boundaries of their fields to boost their income.

On the occasion, the PM inaugurated a bridge across Ganga in Chunar, 108 drug centres and laid the foundation stone for Mirzapur District Hospital and a Rs 229 crore Mirzapur-Allahabad National Highway Road widening project.

The PM said that health services were on top of his government’s priority. “People of not only Mirzapur but Bhadohi, Sonebhadra, Chadauli and adjoining areas will be benefitted after the opening of the new medical college. We have also opened 108 drug centres to make available cheaper medicines to the poor to cut down their monthly medical expenses. Dialysis Centre will also be set-up for poor patients. We are taking one step after another to bridge the gap between the rich and the poor,” he said.

Lauding the efforts of the Yogi Adityanath government, Modi said that ever since the BJP government took over in Uttar Pradesh, the pace of development was accelerated in Eastern Uttar Pradesh, which was neglected by previous regimes for decades.

“Purvanchal Expressway, Perishable Cargo Centre, Bansagar Irrigation Project and launching of several other projects in the region will boost the industrial development in Eastern Uttar Pradesh and provide job opportunities to people in the region,” said the PM.

Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanth said that Congress ruled for 55 years but could not give an AIIMS to Uttar Pradesh. “Since independence, only 13 medical colleges could be set-up in Uttar Pradesh but in the last four years PM Narendra Modi gave 13 medical colleges, two AIIMS and Cancer Institutes to the state,” said the CM.

Earlier, the PM held a meeting with Party office bearers in Varanasi to chalk out a strategy for 2019 Lok Sabha polls for Eastern Uttar Pradesh. His visit to Mirzapur is being seen as cementing the ties with the NDA partner Apna Dal-S and consolidate its backward vote-bank. Union Minister Anupriya Patel, who is also MP from Mirzapur, was also present on the occasion.
