Sri Rudram is one of the oldest Vedic hymns and is in praise of Lord Shiva. On chanting Sri Rudram, Lord Shiva’s divine qualities are invoked.

Lord Shiva is a Abishekapriya – therefore a steady stream of nectar (abisheka) is directed on the Shiva Linga. This helps pacify his temper (manyu) during the chanting of the Sri Rudram. In turn, Lord Shiva grants his devotees with everything one could aspire for. Sri Rudram is a powerful form of worshipping Lord Shiva, the very source of cosmic energy in this universe.

Sri Rudra Prashna which occurs in the mid-section of the Taitriya Yajus Samhita is comprised of Namakam and Chamakam. Chanting the Rudram with fervor is known to remove all doshas (sins/defects) and duritas (difficulties). The first part of the Samhita is known as the Namakam and is intended to invoke the Roudric energy through the use of "Nama" in it. The second part if known as the Chamakam and through the use of "Cha me" which means "grant me", it requests the Almighty to bestow one with his or her desires.
