Chromebook users may soon have access to amost every Android appMumbai, Apr 25(AZINS) It looks like Google is attempting to expand the reach of its Chrome OS, giving users access to Android apps as well.

A Reddit user over the weekend posted images of his settings menu, on his Chromebook running Chrome OS version 51. The screenshot shows a checkbox labelled “Enable Android apps to run on your Chromebook." According to him, the option disappears almost immediately and doesn’t return, but a quick look at the source code indicates that Chromebook users will soon be able to access all the games and apps on the Google Play Store.

The version of Chrome OS in question is currently only available in the Developer Channel, and some others who have tried out the option say it displays a quick tutorial on accessing Play Store apps before automatically closing. Of course, this does show that it’ll be Google’s next major announcement (likely at Google I/O next month).

Despite insistence by top Google executives in the past that Chrome OS and Android would remain separate, after rumours emerged they might be merging, the update is definitely good news for Chromebook users. Android has had better support over the years, and features a much larger variety of apps and games as compared to Chrome OS. An option to run Android apps only improves the flexibility of Google’s sidelined platform.
